Manufactured with Proprietary Photoluminescent Aggregate

Firefly glow-in-the-dark products are manufactured by embedding Glow Stone aggregate deep into the paver, ensuring a permanent bond resilient against surface traffic and freeze-thaw cycles.  The textured surface resists deicing salt, chlorine, mild acids, and spills like gasoline or oil. 


The base of paver is comprised of larger aggregates that give it high compressive strength, while the face is made with fine aggregates and dense concrete mix that create a smooth, durable surface.

Firefly polymeric sand is designed for paver joints up to 2" wide.  Much like our pavers, glow sand offers a subtle, continuous glow for 6-8 hours after dark, ideal for enhancing safety to low-level illuminated public walkways, parks, and bike paths.

How Does Firefly Work?

Firefly glow pavers and chips are made from a fascinating material that uses simple yet effective technology to create a magical glow.

UV Light Absorption

During the day, the glow-in-the-dark chips absorb UV light from the sun.   This is similar to how solar panels work, but instead of converting sunlight into electricity, the glow chips store the energy for later use.  Even on cloudy days, enough UV rays penetrate to keep the glow chips charged.

Energy Storage

The energy absorbed from the sun is stored in luminescent materials embedded within the aggregate.  These materials are typically made from a glass-based substance infused with special phosphorescent compounds.  These compounds can hold onto the energy for several hours.

Ambient Light

Once the sun sets, the stored energy is gradually released as light.  This process, called luminescence, creates a soft, glowing effect that can last for 6-8 hours.  The glow is not just a surface effect; the luminescent materials are embedded throughout the aggregate.  This ensures the glow won't wear off or fade over time.
